The nation’s 113.4 million homes have nearly 89 million air conditioning and heating systems. By the end of 2007, they consumed close to 624 billion kWh, or about 44.5 percent of all electricity used in homes. That number comes from operating the air conditioner, electric fan and/or heat pump or electric furnace. Although this is high as a percentage, the amount of energy they consume is not the largest issue, it’s the quantity of wasted energy represented in that figure.

The underlying reason for such waste by air conditioning and heating systems is very simple. It has to do with something called “starved airflow.” To operate effectively, A/C units need 400 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) per ton. Yet, most systems function with an average of 265-270 CFM/ton - a scarcity that accounts for billions of lost kWh. The mechanical causes for such shortages are many but they can be primarily traced to three system chokepoints: the airflow filter, an uncared-for evaporative coil, and undersized return air ducts.

Your home’s A/C system produces much of its own pollution and debris that affects its operation. The system filter and the e-coil are perhaps the largest growth source of bacteria and mold in a typical home based on the biological nesting that occurs within the system. When your A/C system operates, it can pull a volume of air equal to 100 percent of your home’s air volume through its contaminated filter and e-coil about every 8-12 minutes.

1. To most people, pollution and energy consumption are tied together. Thus, when one is able to reduce air indoor contamination and energy use, one takes a major step forward in the ‘greening of the home.’ And since the A/C system is the largest single energy user and the biggest source of indoor contamination, true ‘home greening’ can take place by installing an Everclean Green system and eliminating these problems within the A/C system.
2. A dirty A/C system is never efficient. There is more wear and tear on system components in a dirty system. There is a direct relationship between trying to control debris within the unit and efficiency of the system. Many times, a restrictive filter is used to try to prevent a dirty system; however, it doesn’t really clean the system or the air and causes an acceleration in energy use. In much the same way, a dirty coil restricts air, promotes microbial growth, and hinders efficient cooling ratio.
3. The key for gaining system efficiency is to get 400 CFM per ton of airflow through the A/C. Currently, the nation’s 89 million A/C systems average about 265 CFM -- caused by starved airflow from dirty, restrictive filters, and loaded A/C coils. 4. The Everclean Green system uses a two-pronged approach to clean the air and kill common germs.
