Before Your Generator Visit: What to Expect
A generator estimate is a site visit, not just a sales conversation. We're working out what your home needs before anyone writes a proposal. Here's what that visit covers and how to get ready.
What we'll look at
- Your electrical panel — capacity, condition, and what it takes to tie in an automatic transfer switch (ATS).
- Meter location and gas service — whether you're on natural gas or need a propane setup, and what's already in place.
- Siting and clearances — where the unit can sit relative to windows, doors, property lines, and required setbacks.
What to think about beforehand
- What has to stay powered. AC, well pump, medical equipment, refrigerator, garage door — the list is different in every household, and it shapes the whole conversation.
- Your outage history. How often you lose power, how long it usually lasts, and whether it's ever caused a real problem — spoiled food, no AC in August, a sump pump quitting.
- HOA rules, if you have one. Some communities have placement or screening requirements. Mention any you know of up front; it saves a step later.
What happens next
If a system makes sense for your home, we put together a proposal with sizing and pricing. Once you approve it, we schedule the install — electrical tie-in, fuel or gas line work, ATS installation, and the required inspection.
We only install Kohler, and we're a Kohler Titanium Dealer and Titan Certified. The electrical (EC13011350) and gas/plumbing (CFC1429106) licenses are held in-house, so the crew doing the tie-in and the gas work is ours. Once everything's inspected and signed off, we set up OnCue Plus so you can monitor the generator, receive alerts, and confirm its scheduled exercise runs.
Service visits for existing generators (any make)
If you already own a generator and we're coming out for maintenance or a repair, we service all makes, not just Kohler. Have the unit accessible. If there's a fault code on the display, or symptoms you've noticed — won't start, runs but won't transfer, unusual noise — pass that along when you schedule so the tech comes prepared. Bring any maintenance records you have; if we've serviced it, we already have that history.
